Iran’s deputy foreign minister does not set a date for a second round of negotiations with the U.S

Flags of Iran and the United States flying side by side against a blue sky.

Iran’s deputy foreign minister, Saeed Hatibzadeh, says no date has been set for a second round of negotiations with the United States.

“We cannot set a date (for the second round of negotiations) until we gather our opinions on the framework of the agreement,” Hatibzadeh told reporters at the Antalya Diplomatic Forum (ADF) in Turkiye.

“We are currently focusing on finalizing the framework of the agreement between the two sides,” he said, adding, “We do not want to engage in any negotiations or talks where failure is foreseen, which can serve as a pretext for another escalation of tensions.”

Tasnim News, which represents the positions of Iran’s hardliners and the military, also reported based on information obtained from related sources, “Iran has not agreed to the next deal for now because of Trump’s maritime blockade against Iran and excessive U.S. demands revealed in negotiations where messages have been exchanged until recently.”

“Iran emphasized that the U.S. refraining from excessive demands is a major condition for continuing negotiations,” the media continued. “Otherwise, Iran will not waste time with meaningless negotiations.”

He added that the position was communicated to U.S. officials through Pakistan, the arbitrator.

Regarding the second round of negotiations between the U.S. and Iran, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) quoted a senior Trump administration official as saying that it is likely to take place in Pakistan on the 20th (17th) local time, and there were reports that negotiations were also being prepared in Pakistan.
